BOARD OF DIRECTORS
The Board of Directors of NSCA is a community group concerned about availability of choices for parents and their students who are struggling in English, language arts, reading, speaking, math and social-emotional control issues in the traditional school environment. The board team continues to support the vision of the founding board for these students being successful in a small learning community with integrated enrichment activities along high academic and behavioral expectations.
KRIS STUEBNER- President
Kris Stuebner, Director of Administration and Marketing for JEM Management Corporation, was born and raised in Fresno, California and attended Bullard High School, Fresno City College and Fresno State. Kris has over 25 years in Human Resources, part of his responsibilities at JEM Management is overseeing human resources, safety, benefits, insurance, information technology, workers compensation, payroll and marketing. Kris also serves as Regional Vice President for the California Employer Advisory Council. Personally, Kris is married to Priscilla and has two wonderful little girls, Kayla and Alyssa. He is very active with his children, serving as Parent Teacher Club President, volunteer with the Girl Scouts of America, Sunday School teacher and volunteer at Trinity Lutheran Church.
DARLENE LAVAL-Vice President
Darlene Laval, currently serving as a site administrator for an Adult Transition Program in Fresno Unified School District, comes to New Spirit’s board with a 45 years experience in education. Among her experiences was serving for 11 years as a board member for Fresno Unified School District. She also served as an administrator at Bullard High School and Hoover High School and Program Manager for Fresno Unified Office of State and Federal Programs.
Kathy Brown, Masters of Science in Counseling, has 35 years experience as an elementary and middle school teacher with expertise in the area of Language Arts, social studies and counseling. After teaching twenty-three years in elementary and middle school, she served as an administrator for Fresno Unified School District working primarily with at-risk and second language students in southeast Fresno. Her schools were recognized for the highest percentage of re-designation of Limited English speaking students for ten years. She also was principal for four years of a very successful summer school at Kings Canyon Middle School for LEP students.
Her summer school was featured in articles in the Fresno Bee and replicated at other middle schools. She believes in an integrated curriculum and truly creating a safe and warm school culture that allows students to thrive. She brings the ability to manage large budgets, as state compliance and budgets were a major component of her job as Program Manager and knowledge of middle school core curriculum, state standards and the importance of using data to improve instruction.
She is an advocate of home visits by staff to meet new students and create welcoming environment for parents. She will serve on the Governing Board and as first executive director.
